Wake (Subic) John Gianvito

Film index A to Z

A towering epic, Wake (Subic) invites us to rethink the history of the Philippines since the 1899 war against the United States. In this culmination of a massive project begun with Vapor Trail (Clark) in 2010, John Gianvito investigates the environmental, human and political impacts of the abandoned American naval base at Subic Bay. Filmed over the course of several years, the film skilfully assembles archival materials and testimonials from activists and from residents directly affected by the base’s toxic waste. The result is a sharp denunciation of the disastrous effects of colonialism. With a historian’s precision, Gianvito uses multiple time scales and perfect pacing to create an essential work.
