International Short and Medium-Length Competition

The Masked Monkeys Anja Dornieden, Juan David Gonzalez Monroy

Film index A to Z

In Indonesia, monkeys and their trainers put on popular street performances. The monkey mimes stereotypical people, does acrobatic tricks and is rewarded with treats. The part where he dons a human mask, entering the Javanese tradition of masked performance in miniature, is the heart of the show. It is a mystical moment. Meanwhile, the trainer is looking not only to make a living, but to earn respect. An essay filmed in high-contrast black and white, The Masked Monkeys draws us into an experience at once anthropomorphic and disconcertingly distanced. In a typically ethnographic tone, a narrator analyses the relationship between man and monkey, over images steeped in strangeness and malaise.
