Film index A to Z

Starting from a surrealistic premise worthy of reality TV, Chelsea McMullan (My Prairie Home, RIDM 2013) presents a hallucinatory, unforgettable family story. John Hanmer was a former Canadian cop turned drug trafficker, exiled in Thailand and killed in the Philippines. His life was, to put it mildly, atypical. When his children, Michael and Shannon, learned through Facebook that they had a half-brother and a half-sister in Thailand, with the same first names as them, they decided to go meet them and unearth their mysterious father’s secrets. A search for identity, a poetic exploration of culture shock, a melodrama and a deadpan comedy, Michael Shannon Michael Shannon John is driven by a savvy blend of styles that helps bring its elusive subject into focus.
