Gatekeeper Yung Chang

Film index A to Z

Ex-cop Yukio Shige has a busy retirement. As often as he can, he watches over the Tojinbo cliffs, which attract many tourists but are also the site of numerous suicides. Working with a team of volunteers and a set of binoculars, Shige has made it his mission to save lives with consoling words. Yung Chang (Up the Yangtze, The Fruit Hunters) films the dedicated old man with soft sympathy as he scans the shadowy parts of a famously beautiful landscape. As the last resort for tormented souls in a country with one of the world’s highest suicide rates, always ready to offer a mochi from his bakery to those he saves, he must also live with the ghosts of those he could not. A superb portrait.
