The future perfect

Xiaobin is 17 and has just arrived in Argentina to join her family, already emigrated from China. She finds a menial job, but communication is an obstacle. Using savings she’s squirreled away secretly, she decides to enrol in language classes, and starts putting her new knowledge to work. One evening she meets Vijay, an Indian immigrant she develops an affection for as they practice speaking Spanish together. While she learns to master the conditional, she starts imagining the different paths her life could take. Nele Wohlatz deftly blends documentary and fiction, real life and ideal life, in a surprising and tender film about identity, exile and youth. Golden Leopard for best first film, Locarno.
